Thanks for the comment, Chris. The original sentence assumed but did not state that the photographer and camera would stay in the same position, and this common and usual practice has the effect of altering depth of field. The restatement reads "Using a longer focal length (either fixed or zoom) to increase the magnification of a subject at the same camera to subject distance decreases depth of field. Maintaining camera to subject distance and zooming to a shorter focal length will increase depth of field. "

"In all cases depth of field decreases as lens focal length increases, and at any given aperture, the depth of field of zoom lenses is greatest at the shortest focal length and least at the longest focal length."

That statement is incorrect.

In the case where magnification is held constant changes in focal length will not produce increases or decreases in DOF. For example (full frame sensor): a 55mm lens 6.2 feet from a subject yields magnification of X.03 and at f/3.5 DOF is 10.5 inches. A 200mm lens 22.25 feet from a subject yields magnification of X.03 and at f/3.5 DOF is 10.5 inches.

Thanks for your comment, Kim. My goal is to help people deepen their understanding of photography and their equipment so they are comfortable with a wider range of options. Real creative freedom comes through the discipline of learning how to do more things in different ways.
